High performance deep packet inspection on multi-core platform

Deep packet inspection (DPI) provides the ability to perform quality of service (QoS) and Intrusion Detection on network packets. But since the explosive growth of Internet, performance and scalability issues have been raised due to the gap between network and end-system speeds. This article describles how a desirable DPI system with multi-gigabits throughput and good scalability should be like by exploiting parallelism on network interface card, network stack and user applications. Connection-based parallelism, affinity-based scheduling and lock-free data structure are the main technologies introduced to alleviate the performance and scalability issues. A common DPI application L7-Filter is used as an example to illustrate the applicaiton level parallelism

The influence of bovine serum albumin on β-lactoglobulin denaturation, aggregation and gelation

peer-reviewedThe effect of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the heat-induced denaturation, aggregation and subsequent acid-induced gelation of β-lactoglobulin (β-lg) was investigated in this work. Changes in the denaturation kinetics of β-lg during heating at 78 °C were determined by monitoring the disappearance of the native protein by reverse-phase chromatography. Replacing β-lg with increasing amounts of BSA, while keeping the total protein concentration constant at 5% (w/w), significantly increased the denaturation rate of β-lg from 2.57±0.30×10−3(g L−1)(1−n)s−1 to 5.07±0.72×10−3(g L−1)(1−n)s−1 (β-lg: BSA ratio of 3:1 w/w). The reaction order for β-lg was 1.40±0.09. Partial replacement of β-lg with BSA (β-lg: BSA ratio of 3:1 w/w) significantly increased the reaction order to 1.67±0.13. Heat-induced aggregates between β-lg and BSA were studied by dynamic light scattering, two-dimensional electrophoresis and size exclusion chromatography. The partial replacement of β-lg with BSA significantly changed the gelling properties of the acid-induced gels. A rapid rate of acidification resulted in a significant decrease, while a slow acidification rate resulted in a significant increase in gel strength. Size exclusion chromatography demonstrated that intermolecular disulphide bond formation occurred during both heat-induced denaturation/aggregation and subsequent acid-induced gelation. Provider Education on Physical Activity for Older Adults

PROVIDER EDUCATION ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR OLDER ADULTS An Abstract of the Scholarly Project by Joseph Morris The purpose of this study was to educate nursing staff and providers on the importance of physical activity for older adults to prevent functional decline and maintain quality of life. The project was conducted online using Qualtrics survey software. Data was collected from October 25, 2021 to November 25, 2021. Nursing staff and healthcare providers (physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants) that are actively practicing medicine and have experience interacting with older adults participated by completing a two-part survey. The survey consisted of a pretest, an educational resource, and finished with a posttest identical to the pretest. The data collected from completed surveys were used to measure participant knowledge. The findings indicated that many health care providers and registered nurses already discuss physical activity with older adults. Having participants rate their knowledge level regarding physical activity for older adults varied. Comparison of both the pretest and posttest showed education did in fact increase participant knowledge related to the benefits of physical activity for older adults. Overall, the project findings support education as a means of increasing knowledge. Future replication of this study should be considered with a larger sample size to further support the effectiveness of healthcare provider and registered nurse education as a means of increasing knowledge regarding the importance of physical activity for older adults

Byzantine Foreign Policy During the Reign of Constans II

This thesis examines the foreign policy of Constans II as the first Byzantine Emperor to rule after the initial Arab conquests in Syria-Palestine. His reign, 641-668, was the first reign of a Byzantine Emperor where the entire reign was subject to Arab raids and invasions. Constans II also had to contend with the Slavs in Thessalonica and Greece and the Lombards in Italy. To complicate matters more, Constans II was forced to cope with the religious division between the eastern and western churches due to Monothelitism in the East. Beset on every frontier and inheriting a much reduced empire after decades of intermittent warfare and several disastrous defeats, scholars have reasoned that Constans II\u27s reign was defensive and turbulent in nature. This thesis uses literary and archeological sources to argue that Constans II had a foreign policy focused on actively retaking lost Byzantine territory. While stabilizing the frontiers in his early reign, he suffered devastating defeats and serious threats, primarily from the sea, where the Arab navy had gained superiority. His attempt in securing the western provinces of Italy and North Africa demonstrate not an emperor who was abandoning Constantinople, but one that was attempting to regain the initiative from the Arabs and deprive them of Egypt, which was providing the Arabs with a navy, wealth, and an agricultural surplus. Despite the Byzantine losses Constans II did not accept the transformation in Byzantine territory and influence. The thesis concludes with a historical analysis of his successors and how their foreign policies differed from Constans II\u27s

Electronic Literature Directory: Collaborative Knowledge Management for the Literary Humanities

In 1999, the Electronic Literature Organization developed a comprehensive directory of electronic literature that has guided readers to thousands of works of electronic literature and helped to develop an international humanities discipline. But as the nature and complexion of the field has changed and matured, the directory has become both technologically and conceptually outdated. A decade after the release of the first incarnation of the directory, the authors and scholars at the Electronic Literature Organization will rebuild the Electronic Literature Directory using an open source, collaborative knowledge management platform and Semantic Web-based tools. The completely reconstructed directory will make records of works of electronic literature more accessible to the public, a team of editors will develop a metatag vocabulary and revise descriptions of listed works, and the finished product will show works in the context of critical scholarship about electronic literature
